Your quick guide to winter boat storage, stress-free and with a smile!

The winter storage of  your boat doesn’t have to be difficult or stressful. Think of it as a final ritual after an exciting season on the water. With the right preparation, your boat will be ready to hit the water again in spring - clean, dry, and in perfect shape.

Here are a few simple steps to help you get everything done smoothly, effectively, and without unnecessary hassle.

1. Take Your Boat Out of the Water

The most important rule: never leave your boat in the water over winter. Haul it out and secure it on a trailer or stand in a dry, well-ventilated area.

2. A Thorough Clean Makes All the Difference

Before your boat goes into its “winter sleep,” give it a proper wash. Salt, algae, and fuel residues can cause damage over time. Clean the hull and deck, remove any buildup, and if possible, apply a coat of protective wax. Come spring, your boat will look as good as new.

3. Water Is the Number One Enemy

It sounds simple, but leftover water is one of the main causes of winter damage. Empty freshwater tanks, flush the system, and protect plumbing with a non-toxic antifreeze. Don’t forget to check the bilge - it should be completely dry.

4. Give Your Engine a Well-Deserved Rest

Before putting the engine away for the season, take a few minutes to care for it properly:

  • Change the oil and filter - old oil can contain acids that cause corrosion.
  • Protect the cooling system with antifreeze.
  • If you have an outboard motor, store it upright in a dry place.

Also, fill the fuel tank to prevent moisture condensation and add a fuel stabilizer.

5. Electric Motors and Batteries - Low Maintenance, High Reliability

Electric drives need a little attention too, but much less than combustion engines.

  • Clean the motor gently and protect all terminals and connectors with an anti-corrosion spray. If possible, store it in a dry spot.
  • Batteries can usually stay on board. Modern lithium-ion batteries are resistant to cold and can often be discharged safely down to –20°C.
  • Charge them to about 60–70% before winter - this is the ideal level to maintain battery health. Avoid leaving them fully charged or completely drained.
  • Never charge batteries below 0°C - it can permanently damage the cells.
  • Check the charge level every six weeks or so during storage.
  • And finally, always follow your manufacturer’s recommendations for storage and maintenance.

Did you know?

With CANNA One and CANNA Unity, winterizing is exceptionally simple. Our advanced electric systems and high-performance lithium-ion batteries require only basic care: make sure they’re charged to the right level and stored in a dry, well-ventilated area.

No oil changes, no complicated maintenance - just peace of mind. That’s one of the great advantages of electric propulsion: fewer chores, more relaxation.

6. Give the Interior a Bit of Spa Treatment

Remove everything that might absorb moisture - cushions, blankets, electronics. Leave cupboards and lockers open for air circulation, and place moisture absorbers inside. If possible, leave a small gap in the cover or canopy - fresh air is the best defense against mold.

7. A Quality Cover Is Worth It

A good cover is one of the best investments you can make. It should fit well, be UV-resistant, and completely waterproof. Make sure snow doesn’t accumulate on top, and check it occasionally throughout the winter.

And of course, like everything we design, they’re not only practical but also stylish - because elegant design is just as important to us as functionality.

 8. Small Details That Make a Big Difference

Don’t forget the little things:

  • Disconnect auxiliary batteries and store them somewhere warm.
  • Lubricate metal parts to prevent corrosion.
  • Check that all boat documents are up to date - it’ll save time in spring.

9. The Final Touch

Winterizing your boat isn’t a chore - it’s a way to wrap up the season with care. Do it with a smile, maybe with your favorite playlist on, and think about that first sunny spring day when you’ll feel the wind in your hair again.

A well-prepared boat will reward you with a trouble-free start to the new season - leaving you free to enjoy what truly matters: being on the water.
